The 34-year-old Spaniard made his professional debut in 2000 with the Madrid-based club, and is prominently known for his career in the English Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, where he claimed the UEFA Champions League 2011/2012 and UEFA Europa League 2012/13 titles.

Torres then moved to Italy, joining AC Milan in 2014 for a short stint before returning to Atletico to earn his second UEFA Europa League title in 2017.

Sagan Tosu are currently ranked 17th in the J.League, Japan’s top flight, where he will join fellow Spaniard superstar Andres Iniesta, who completed his move to Vissel Kobe in May.

"I will have a good friend in the league too with Andres Iniesta,” Torres added. “It is an exciting challenge for both of us.

"I had offers from France, Germany, other clubs in Spain, but I did not want to join another European club, as I had the best end possible here with my team (Atletico)."
